Tan Suit Guy

The Mission

One man. One RV. One conversation at a time.

The Tan Suit Guy project rolls out of Bend, Oregon in summer 2026 and winds its way to Washington D.C.

The Story

A small idea, a big country.

Words matter. Truth matters. Respect matters.

It started, like most stubborn ideas, with a long drive and a lot of bad radio. Somewhere between Bend and the next town over, the question wouldn't go away: when did we forget how to talk to each other? So I bought a tan suit. I tuned up an old RV. I put a microphone on the passenger seat and a cat in the window. And I made a plan to drive from my front door to the steps of the Capitol — stopping at diners, gas stations, county fairs, and any kitchen table that would have me. The whole project is built on three rules: respect the person, explore the idea, and build bridges, not walls. That's it. No script, no sponsors with strings, no algorithm to feed. Just a long drive and a long listen.

Unity and conversation

Mission statement

A shared reality.

To help to forge a basic shared reality of what we as citizens want and need going forward. Realize that a social contract of a high quality of life for ordinary people = a more durable national unity. To come to a true understanding that we cannot leave other citizens behind and expect things to go well. Recognize that fair play and egalitarian mindset allow our aspirational founding ideals to be at their best. And to remember that the way we talk to and think of each other is of undeniable importance. When they are most difficult to bring, civility and love are often the most valued traits we are remembered for. Toward this end here is my contribution: To engage in good faith conversations with fellow citizens in order to reduce polarization. I believe if we listen to understand, and we do it under good faith, our minds can open. An open mind, good faith and listening to understand makes it hard to stay extremely polarized. It takes a lot of energy to stay engaged with hate and mistrust of the people around us. If we really all want the same basic things, we need to hammer that down and stay focused on it. A shared reality on these basics is something the founding fathers said would be a requirement. And it will never happen if we are divided on the basics of what is most important. Living in this time of constant change, information overload and distraction its harder than ever. So let’s trust them on this and put in the hard work. Forge a basic shared reality of wants and needs. No one is coming to save us. We are they.

The Vision

A country that can still disagree without dissolving.

We're not here to change minds. We're here to understand them. By the time the RV rolls into D.C., the goal isn't a manifesto — it's a library of human voices that reminds us we're more alike than the feeds would have us believe.
